According to annual report on lower limb injury, 10.4 million injuries in America are issues with the knee. They are the main reason we can actually walk, run, jump and make other movements. Your knees are responsible for flexion, extension, slight internal and external rotations. Although knees are a sturdy and complex joint of the body, they are susceptible to frequent injuries.
The joint of the knee is an intricate design made up of three bones of the tibia (shin), patella (kneecap) and the femur. A tendon underlies the kneecap to give strength and motion to the knee and cartilage secures the femur to the shin bone. The meniscus cushions the femur and shin (tibia) bones. All these components work together to accomplish the tasks of extensive movement during everyday activities.
Usually, day-to-day activities don’t cause problems, but when knee pain starts, it might just be from something you regularly do. Most of us will have minor knee pain at some point in our lives.
But most knee pain, knee problems and knee injuries come from sports injuries, recreational activities, work injuries or even home projects. Not all knee pain is serious. But some knee injuries and medical conditions, including osteoarthritis, can lead to more pain, more damage and even disability if left untreated.
Pain that can be felt in the front of the knee is most likely to be associated with the kneecap. Pain felt on the inside of the knee is often caused by injuries to the MCL, tears to the meniscus, and arthritis. LCL injuries, meniscus tears tendonitis and arthritis most often causes pain on the outside of the knee. And fluid that collects on the back of the knee causes pain due to a condition called Baker’s Cyst. Soft tissues injuries to the knee are most likely the result of overuse or disuse.
ACL, MCL and Meniscus Tears
The two most common causes of a meniscus tear are due to traumatic injury (often seen in athletes) and degenerative processes (seen in older patients who have more brittle cartilage). The most common mechanism of a traumatic meniscus tear occurs when the knee joint is bent and the knee is then twisted.
Runner’s Knee
Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS or IT Band Syndrome)), otherwise known as Runner’s Knee, can be described as outside (lateral) knee pain that is made worse by any lower limb activities, most notably running and cycling.
Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, also called Anterior Knee Pain Syndrome, is caused by imbalances in the forces controlling patellar tracking during knee flexion and extension, particularly with overloading of the joint.
