I have raced at the Bercy Supercross. In 1984, we actually raced it twice. The first race was right after the Daytona Supercross in March, and then we raced again at Bercy in December.
The very first year was cool. But the track was an unknown. When we (the top American Supercross racers) got there, we realized they (the organizers) didn’t know fully how to put on a supercross. The track was so narrow, it was hard to pass, it was a ‘European’ supercross.
But also that first year, I realized how awesome a ‘show’ can be. Their show was awesome in Bercy! All of us were surprised at how great it was!
My very first thought though, the first time I got to Bercy: “Wow, this is a small track!” But I raced there again in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, and 1989. I’ve also gone another time after I retired from professional supercross and motocross racing.

For the fans that have never been there – the greatest thing to me about the Bercy Supercross is that it is right in the middle of one of the greatest cities in the world – Paris. Bercy is a section of Paris, but it is great. The train station stops right near the Palais Omnisports de Bercy. You can go to famous art districts. You can go to shopping districts. You can see the Eiffel Tower, you can go to one of the famous streets/areas in the world – The Champs-lyses.
You can get a lot of culture there, while just attending a supercross as well. That is such a cool aspect about Bercy.
A lot of times when you go to a supercross or especially a motocross, you could be in a small town with not a lot to see. But when you fly into Paris, especially if you are an American fan, I recommend a ‘trip’ out of it.

DV – David Vuillemin, 2000
Go before the race. Get acclimated to the time change. Enjoy the city for all it’s worth. Learn about the culture. Enjoy the culture. You are a visitor in a foreign country. Soak it in. Try to live and enjoy your time just like the French do. Break your ‘American’ habits. Try something uniquely French. If you do that, you learn to appreciate how others live.
The problem with America and Americans – we are used to anything, anytime, anywhere. In Europe, it’s just not that way. Stay some time after the race too if you can.
Now, onto the race – expect a ‘show’ like you can’t believe! The closest thing to it in America was the US Open supercross back in the day. It is very hard to make the show that Bercy does in America at a supercross, because Bercy is actually an arena. They are able to control the sound, the lights, … every aspect possible to make the ‘show’ better. It’s just hard to duplicate in America, especially inside a major stadium supercross venue. The do everything they can to make a spectacular show.

Sebastien Tortelli, 2000, on Honda
The track is right up against the stands, so it’s an exciting place to watch a race – close up.
As a racer, there is really two ways to go about approaching Bercy Supercross.
If you go strictly as a ‘racer’, which I have done, I don’t even try to get acclimated to the time change, because I’m racing late at night. I’m already fully awake. Because I have slept most of the day! I would miss breakfast, eat a late lunch, because I’m still operating on my California time zone, which is nine hours earlier.

Jeremy McGrath, Bercy 2000
If you go there strictly as a racer, don’t go sight-seeing. Don’t do anything ‘fun’ until after the race. Stay focused on the race. One thing I learned to do was keep food in my hotel room so I could eat when I want, especially very late at night. If you want to enjoy the city, do it after the racing is complete.
As a racer, if you want to approach it in the second way (and I did this too), get to Paris a few days early. Get acclimated to the time change. Tour around during the day in the city to relax. When it’s time for race days, get to the arena in the afternoon, get warmed up, and get ready to race.
And for a racer, if you’ve ever done arenacross, get ready for that, because Bercy is like that – tight.
This year’s Bercy Supercross is November 19, 20, and 21.

Me and JMB
A little transition. Some of you know, some of you don’t know, but I’ve pursued a 4 wheel racing career since retiring from professional supercross and motocross racing. I still ride though.
I will be racing the Baja 1000, on a motorcycle, in class 40 – which means over 40 years old, with a good group of guys.
In my off road truck racing career, I’ve been focusing on trying to win the TORC series (TORC stands for The Off Road Championship).
It’s been a challenging year in TORC. Rob MacCachren was my main competitor. He won the championship last year. It came down to the final race this season in Crandon, Wisconsin for this year’s championship. There are two days of racing – Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, I was able to pass Rob on the last lap, and stretch out our points lead to seven. On Sunday, I had to finish ahead of Rob, or right behind him, to clinch the championship. I was able to finish in front of him (I finished in second), and we won the championship.
Off road truck racing …. it’s like having a Sprint Car, except you can jump 150 feet. 900 horsepower. That’s what Jeremy McGrath and I have been doing since we retired from supercross and motocross racing.
This video might give you a taste of what TORC and off road truck racing is all about (video courtesy Red Bull):

Check out this awesome video of KTM rider Kornel Nemuth tearing it up on his KTM. We found this over at vitalmx.com check out vital for all sorts of other awesome content!

This week I caught up with Kevin Windham. In the video below, Kevin Windham talks about the Superbowl Champions, the NFL’s New Orleans Saints, his family, his future plans for racing and beyond.
The Superbowl XLIV champions, the New Orleans Saints, have many fans – among them is none other than the number 14 in Supercross, Kevin Windham. While the NFL season started when Supercross was in its off season, Kevin was able to take part in season tickets to his favorite NFL team – da’ Saints. Eventually the 2010 Supercross season got underway in January, which meant Kevin was flying off after those Saturday night Main Events back East to watch the New Orleans Saints Playoff games.
On February 7, 2010 the New Orleans Saints headed to the Superbowl in Miami, Florida and Kevin Windham and his wife Dottie made arrangements to attend this momentous occasion. First, however Kevin had to finish up a Supercross race in San Diego the night before.
You’ll like what Kevin has to ‘say’ about the Saints, and more: )
Ange: Supercross went ‘Pink’ and helped towards a cure and to raise awareness of Breast Cancer, what do you think?
Kevin: Honda is doing its part, MSR, & DVS is doing some things with hats and stuff and to be a part of it is an honor. Being a professional I think it is important and one of the biggest things we can do is to bring awareness to causes like this, Breast Cancer awareness, which I think is great. I personally know people that have been affected. Being a father, a son, husband and all, I think no one is exempt from this and awareness is a good thing. Every little bit financially helps. Feld, the riders and the teams are doing whatever little bit they can and in the grand scheme of things it is an honor.
You are sitting near eighth place right now, how are you feeling about your season?
Horrible. I am not happy with eighth at all. I had a really poor ride in San Francisco and then had a malfunction in San Diego which took me way out of the points. I think obviously everybody knows I am better than eighth and there is time to get where I need to be. I think the points are fairly tight and obviously I am back a little ways but anything can happen.
Dungey laid down the bike in the first turn, and we have a lot of riders going through some really weird stuff. We are not out of it yet but we need to minimize our mistakes and malfunctions. I thought in San Diego I was in a great position to get on the podium, the top 4 or 5 you could throw a blanket over us, it was that close and it was exciting to be a part of that race and hopefully I can do the same here but make it the entire 20 laps.
How is the family and all those little Windham kids?
Things are great! There is a lot going on at our house. We are starting a new business; Planet Fitness Gyms. I am juggling that and some of the opportunities Dottie and I have had go to different places, raising babies, and oh yeah racing motorcycles as well. You know it is all good and fun as my kids are between seven and four months old right now, so parenting is starting to get exciting.
You got a little bit of push from the seven year old with the talking back and then we have the complete infant baby stage, with Elizabeth our littlest one. It is a wide variety of parenting techniques that are being used in our house right now. It is tough to keep them straight, it seems like I am raising two and two are just kind of running wild out in the yard but, it is so much fun and it is really cool to get home after these long weekends where I have not seen them for a few days. They run up to me and I get thirty minute hugs, it is very cool.
A new business endeavor with Dottie, Planet Fitness Gyms sounds pretty cool Kevin!
Yeah, my wife and I are planning to open up a few Planet Fitness gyms in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana area and we are really gearing towards the future. I have said that 2014 would be my retirement plan and obviously some good times have to happen between now and then for me to go four more years. Obviously not falling and hitting the ground and being able to keep your job in this industry, which has been tough the last few years. That is my goal and it is significant to me because my number is 14 and 2014 is also my twentieth season of professional. That is the goal for now and at this point it is very important for us to find out what we are going to do to keep us busy after racing. Right now it is opening Planet Fitness Gyms.
I know there must be a bunch of people that you have to thank that help you day to day.
Yeah, I could not be here without the Geico Powersports Honda Team. The economy is tough on a lot of these teams and my team is sticking strong and they are a great team to be representing. I have DVS, MSR, Spy, Shoei Helmets, Gaerne Boots, Amsoil, and Planet Fitness have all been instrumental in both the team and helping me. Planet Fitness is also helping in this new business endeavor. There are a ton of people that come together to make this thing happen and it is always a pleasure to be a part of this sport and we will keep it going for four more years.

Officially, it’s called the Monster Energy Super X Australasian Supercross Championship, but we know you all call it ‘The Australian Supercross Series’
It’s starts this coming weekend! Here is the series schedule:

Supercross will undergo a ‘Pink’ transformation this weekend in Anaheim to show their support and help promote Breast Cancer Awareness, including contributions to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Orange County.
Expect to see a lot of masculine Supercross guys wearing pink riding gear, or somehow sporting the color to show their support for this great cause. Also it is a Valentines weekend, so many of the guys are getting all kinds of lady love …
Press day is always fun and this week I decided to get a different view from some of the top Supercross guys. Ryan Villopoto, Nick Wey, Justin Brayton, Broc Tickle, Max Anstie, and Eric McCrummen all took a few minutes with me to do the video interviews you see below. (Right now I just have Justin’s interview in the video portion.)
First interview – the guy in third place right now in the Supercross Class, Ryan Villopoto. I had to chat with RV about his current race status, the competition, and that win from San Francisco.
Ryan V: Things are good, I am 10 points down and before San Fran it was 20 so in the last two races I have made up 10 points and we are not even half way yet so I think it is going to be a good series, the rest of it. Ten points is nothing and with just a couple of good finishes, it is racing and anything can still happen. I plan on staying consistent and get good starts and try to get some more wins.
Dungey did race with James at Anaheim 1, and now that James and Chad are out they think there is not a lot of racing to show now but that is not true. Dungey is a tough guy, but I know I can race Ryan, I am right there to battle him, my lap times are right there and even better sometimes. We have yet to go head to head but I am looking forward to it and we should have some good racing when that happens.
San Fran was good. It was a confidence booster and it is always fun winning. That is what we do this for, to win races and in the long run to win a championship. The team is working hard, I am working hard, and the bike is good so we are just going to keep plugging away and try to get some more of those wins and close that points gap.

Next up: The Supercross Rookie from England, Max Anstie. He is currently riding the West Coast Lites on the DNA Shred Stix Star Racing Yamaha team and in seventh place. I asked him how he felt about his first Supercross season, that almost near second at San Diego and what his plans after Anaheim 3 with the eight week racing delay.
Max A: It really took me 3 or 4 races before I really felt comfortable and getting the initial new experience out of the way and to get over the fact that, wow, I am actually here racing Supercross, and it is what I have dreamt about since I was a little kid. But it took me those first few races to get things sorted out, but last weekend at San Diego was really cool and I was riding really good and I started to settle in to a good pace. I felt like I belonged out there and was really riding good. The team and everyone has been putting in a lot of hard work at DNA Shred Stick Star Racing Yamaha, so I am happy and it will be good this weekend.
Last weekend in San Diego I was real close. I was running in fifth and got to second and was catching up to Jake. I was running alongside him at one point in the race, got a little bit held up and then went down on that last lap with two corners to go. I was bummed but that is the way it goes and I actually ended up fourth, it was okay. It was by far the best ride I have had and it was really cool to show everyone on the team that we have been doing out work and the hard work is paying off and I believe I can be up there.
During the eight weeks off, well I have actually just signed up to get my diploma in an American school. I have my diploma from English school but I was in school all day yesterday getting everything ready to go and sorted out. I am looking forward to doing that and I will probably doing a lot of school work. Oh, I passed my driving test last week so it will be nice to drive myself to the test track.
Another Lites guy out at Press Day was Broc Tickle. Broc is one of the four guys in the West Coast Lites to consistently place in the top 10 in the Main. Broc had a fairly good run in the Nationals in 2009, earning a seventh place. Broc told me his opinion on his season so far and his plans during the eight weeks off.
Broc T: It feels good to have a consistent Supercross year. This is my second full year of racing. It is exciting to finally be consistent, but I know I can do better – I know there is a lot of improvement I can do so I am happy with where I am at right now. It is all about confidence out there, with so many great guys racing, but it is all about who has the confidence every weekend and remaining consistent. As for the eight weeks off, I am not sure I would call it off time because I might be riding a 450 on the East Coast so we will see how that goes. Other than that I will probably take a week off and then start with some Outdoor and get my settings ready for the Nationals MX series.
Nick Wey is by far one the funniest Motocross guys I have met during my time with Supercross.com and he did not disappoint with his quick wit and charisma. This year Nick came into the series with no Factory support, like a lot of guys in his boots, but a few races in Nick found himself as a fill in for Chad Reed on the Monster Energy Kawasaki Team. I asked Nick about this turn of events and more …
Nick: I put the most importance on having competitive equipment and with riding the Kawasaki it is an awesome move for me. Having Kawasaki to take me on to their team when Chad got injured was a good deal for me. Being on the Factory bike for a couple of weeks now I think it is perfect timing to prove what I have got on it, so I am excited for this weekend for sure. I am very appreciative to the TiLube guys, Babbitts, MSR, & Foremost for staying with me, we are just kind of organizing some things in the background right now, just so I will be a little more prepared once I am back over there.
I have been riding a Kawasaki for quite some time now but the team came together super late and we were not able to do a lot of development with the bike, so I was running it with settings just how Pro Circuit gave it to us. I am definitely learning a lot from the set up the Kawasaki guys have. They have a lot of smart individuals over there and people putting together a bike for their team – I am learning quite a bit from them.
San Diego I got a good start and was able to lead a couple of laps and kind of made a couple of big mistakes from there and fell back quite a bit. The track was a bit slippery because it was hard packed and add the rain and it was pretty tough to stay consistent on every lap. I almost went down a few times and at one point I got passed by four guys at once, so it was one of those nights where it was tough if you were not just on it. This weekend I am hoping to be a little more comfortable out there and get another good start and stay smooth and finish quite a bit stronger.
The last Supercross West Coast Lites guy I talked to was Eric McCrummen, he rides the 410 bike on Team Hostility. The Pink Supercross race this weekend has special meaning for many and Eric shared with me how he felt about Supercross going ‘Pink’ and what he has going on for Anaheim 3.
Eric M: I will definitely be wearing a lot of pink. It is a special weekend for me because my grandma passed away from breast cancer. I think it is great that Supercross has an opportunity to support this great cause and the awareness of it. I think this weekend should be really good for me with maybe a little inspiration from my grandma up above. It is a special thing that is going on when the sport that I love is going beyond it’s norm to bring awareness to something that has affected my life. As for the bike, Team Hostility did a great job with all pink graphics with the pink ribbons. We got some specially made pink spokes that look pretty cool. There is some stuff on the helmet so keep an eye out for the 410!

The Motocross of Nations, annually the biggest & most prestigious motocross event in the world, will be held in 2011 on the last weekend in September, at the race circuit in Saint Jean d’Angely, France.
FIM President Vito Ippolito, Youthstream President Giuseppe Luongo, Motoclub Angerien President Jean-Marie Boissonnot and FIM/CMS President Dr. Wolfgang Srb confirmed that Saint Jean d’Angely, France, will be the venue for the 2011 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations at the recently completed Motocross of Nations, held last weekend in the USA, and won the Team USA (Manager 5-time World Motocross Champion, and new KTM Race Manager USA Roger De Coster, 2010 AMA Supercross & Motocross Chamion Ryan Dungey, 2010 AMA 250 MX Lites Champion Trey Canard, and Andrew Short).
