The National Committee for Quatlity Assurance (www.ncqa.org) is a national organization that monitors and publishes the quality of care by physicians, groups, hospitals and universities. Because of his electronic medical records, Dr. Markey can demonstrate his quality data "metrics" - monitored aspects of care to the Michigan Quality Improvement Consortium, which is now known as the Medical Quality Improvement Consortium nationally. De-Indentified data is sent securely over the internet daily to the MQIC which analyzes and compares Dr. Markey's metrics to other physicians, groups, hospitals and universities. Reports can be made from these data for the purpose of demonstrating quaility and deficiencies. These data are then referred to the NCQA. If certain standards are met, then the NCQA certifies a doctor as providing high quality care according national standards.
Diabetes Mellitus was the first project chosen by the NCQA. Future projects include: 1) Heart/Stroke, 2) Hypertension, 3) Preventative Care, 4) Coronary Artery Disease, 5) Heart Failure and 6) Myocardial Infarction. Dr. Markey is and has already aquired his data in these categories as an ongoing process and can print out reports comparing himself with others around the country. He compares quite favorably to his peers. When the NCQA takes up other projects, he will be ready for certification. For more information see www.mqic.org.
To provide secure electronic messaging with patients, Dr. Markey has partnered with Relay Health. Although Dr. Markey can discuss non-clinical information with patients via regular email, to ensure patient confidentiality and comply with HIPPA regulations an additional level of security, above and beyond what regular email can provide is required. Relay Health provides the environment for this sensitive communication. By logging into the Relay Health messaging portal, patients can send and recieve secure communications with Dr. Markey. Once you have created an account, when you recieve new messages you will be notified by an email which will then link you to the secure portal to view your message.
Because of his primary training at Emory Medical School and continuing education, as well as his participation in quality improvement programs and education programs, Dr. Markey was elected as a member of the American College of Physicians (A.C.P). This is the national group representing Internal Medicine physicians.
