Normal L. Philips is the pastor / pastoral counselor of A New Thing Ministries International, a parachurch[1] in Atlanta, Georgia. Ordained to the office of elder at New Beginning Full Gospel Baptist Church in Decatur, Georgia, for the past twenty-three years Dr. Phillips has counseled hundreds of families, couples, and individuals on premarital and marriage counseling, anger management, life coaching, trauma, and domestic violence. She established a Marriage and Family Institute that consists of life skill classes for married couples, premarital couples, singles, divorcees, and parents.

She often serves as adjunct professor of Introduction to Christian Counseling and New Testatment Survey at local schools of Biblical studies and as an instructor for the American Association of Christian Counselors’ (AACC) Biblical Counseling Certificate Program entitled “Caring for People God’s Way,” a Lay Counseling Program. Since 1996, she has conducted seminars and workshops on topics related to marriage and family, wellness, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations, limited liability companies (LLC), grant writing, and board development. A public theologian and entrepreneur, she integrates Biblical principles and counseling with business ventures. She is a 2006-2007 VIP member of Cambridge Who’s Who, a network that empowers executives and entrepreneurs.
She is active on several boards and coalitions that sponsor senior adult programs and has established three older adult programs--ROSA (Reaching Out to Senior Adults) in Atlanta, Madison and Rome Georgia, comprising 39 interdenominational churches (includes nine denominations), Faith in Action (FIA) LoveNCare Volunteer Program, a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation project that provides food and friendly visits to homebound elders, and Home Sweet Home Cleaning Services, providing heavy-duty housecleaning services to frail elderly persons in the DeKalb County community.

She received a Doctor of Ministry (DMin) degree from McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago, Illinois, in Pastoral Care; a Master of Divinity (MDiv) degree in Pastoral Care and Counseling from Morehouse School of Religion at The Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in Atlanta, Georgia; completed post-graduate studies in Professional Christian Counseling at Psychological Studies Institute in Atlanta, Georgia; earned a certificate in Biblical Counseling from AACC and a graduate certificate in Gerontology from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia.
She is the author of Violated But Not Forsaken: Triumph of a Rape Survivor, a contributing writer of a sermon called “Should We Stop and Help?” in Volume 2 of Those Preaching Women: African American Preachers Tackle Tough Questions edited by Rev. Dr. Ella Mitchell, and author of many other local and national newspapers and theological publications. In 2007-2008, she produced a television program called “Doing a New Thing” on Comcast Community Television and used this venue to discuss a variety of marriage and family topics, financial issues / strategies, and to promote uniquely gifted people and “unsung heroes,” who would otherwise be unknown.

Dr. Phillips is the mother of Bernard S. Williams III, a thriving civil servant and nonprofit volunteer who works with the Social Security Administration and the grandmother of Kamryn, 13 years old and Nadia, five months old.

[1] A parachurch is a faith-based organization that is not a part of the traditional, organized church. Yet its members and volunteers are engaged in ministry activities and programs that fill gaps in services within local churches and communities.
